... down to the area known as the Battery Paddock. New plantings... with the slope from the gaol wall down to the area known as the Battery ...In February 1913 the Ballarat Junior Technical School opened its doors to its 86 pupils. The old bluestone building in the grounds of the Dana Street Primary School became their temporary home for eight years. In its early years the school offered only a two-year course. The first year was of a general nature giving a thorough grounding in Mathematics and Instrumental Drawing, and introducing students to the various branches of trade work. The second-year students studied for the Junior Technical Certificate and specialized in a course of their choice - either a trade (Woodwork or Fitting and Turning) or a course leading to higher studies at the School of Mines. Increased enrolments - 86 to 110 in the second year. Some applicants were turned away due to lack of space. An abandoned single room school was brought in and this helped for a time. Plans were developed and a two-storied red brick building in the vacinity of the School of Mines was build. An acre of land was reclaimed from the north-east corner of the Ballarat Gaol. The school backed onto the wall of the gaol. The task of landscaping and terracing of the area was to cost a great deal and time. The boys did much of the heavy work. This kept them occupied as the official playground areas were still full of rubble. This photograph shows the work that has been done in terracing and landscaping the area.Junior Technical School with the slope from the gaol wall down to the area known as the Battery Paddock. ... Smith's Gully for the purpose of opening, the new Government... Gully for the purpose of opening, the new Government battery ...Reproduced on p31 of 'Pioneers & Painters' Was destroyed in 1962 bushfire. Now Peter Franks Reserve, St Andrews On Friday 29th (August 1919) …, the Hon. S. Barnes, M. L. A., Minister of Mines, accompanied by Mr W. Everard, M.L.A., Mr. V. Dickson, secretary for Mines, and Mr. Merrin, Chief Mining Inspector, visited Smith's Gully for the purpose of opening, the new Government battery which has recently been erected. The party arrived punctually at 12.30, and was received by an assemblage of about 200 residents, including, those representing local prospecting and mining interests. At the mill house the Minister wished prosperity to mining on the old Queenstown field, and, in a few appropriate remarks, gave the battery the name of St. Andrew's. Then, as the stamps began to fall, three hearty cheers were given by the gathering. ….. The Queenstown field, dating back to the early sixties, might be regarded as a link that took them back to the Augustine age of gold mining in Victoria…From 1868 to 1918 the total yield of gold from the field was 274,606 fine oz. It might be that here, as elsewhere, deeper prospecting would give new life to the Queenstown goldfield. The miners of Queenstown, who through long year's had never lost faith in the possibilities of the field, felt that the purpose for which they were that day marked the beginning of a new era in the history of local reefing. …. The new mill is situated on the bank of the creek opposite the Queenstown Cemetery, and consists of a five head battery (Berdan pan) and 12 h.p. portable steam engine housed in a spacious structure of wood and iron. A concrete weir across the creek provides a good water supply, and all the necessary pumps, settling dams, etc., have been installed. Later on, should circumstances warrant it, it is pro-posed to erect Wilfley tables for concentrates. Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser and Diamond Creek Valley Advocate, Friday 5 September 1919, page 3This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' ... of the Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR) and a battery from New Zealand... of the Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR) and a battery from New Zealand ...173 AIRBORNE BRIGADE (SEPARATE) US ARMY 1 RAR BATTLE GROUP BIEN HOA 1965-1966 On May 5, 1965, the Brigade deployed to South Viet Nam as the first US Army ground combat unit in that war. Upon arrival, the 1st Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR) and a battery from New Zealand (161Royal NZ Artillery) were attached to the Brigade -- making the 173d Airborne the only multi-national combat unit in the war. Initially headquartered in Bien Hoa, the Brigade operated in the four provinces around Saigon. (Xuan Loc, Long Khanh, Phuoc Long & Phuoc Tuy), but (in its roll as a "Fire Brigade") also went to the Central Highlands (Pleiku / Kontum) to fight Viet Cong. The 173d also conducted constant operations against the southern stronghold of the VC Main Force in the legendary Iron Triangle in War Zone D. The brigade was organized as a balanced airborne combat force consisting of two infantry battalions, an artillery battalion, a support battalion, an engineer company, a cavalry troop, an armour company, and a headquarters company. Upon activation, it became the first and only separate airborne brigade in the United States Army. This was the beginning of a long series of "Firsts" for the Brigade. On 5 May 1965, it became the first US Army ground combat unit committed to the war in South Vietnam, where further organizational changes were to take place. Australians attached to the Brigade were: 1st Battalion, of the Royal Australian Regiment (I RAR) and support troops of the 4/19th Prince of Wales Light Horse Regiment (1Troop), 105 Field Battery Royal Australian Artillery, 161 Field Battery Royal New Zealand Artillery, 3 Field Troop Royal Australian Engineers, 161 Reconnaissance Flight, Royal Australian Army Air Corps, 1st Australian Logistical Support Company. The Brigade's two infantry battalions, the First Battalion of the 503' Infantry (1/503`d) and the Second Battalion, of the 503`d Infantry (2/503`) and the attached Australians of 1 RAR constituted the infantrymen available to the Brigade. Their mission was to protect the Bien Hoa Air Base and to close with and destroy or capture the enemy. This was in fact the first operational ground force formed under the ANZUS Defence Treaty. ANZUS was a mutual defence treaty signed in 1951 between Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America. In 1965 the spirit of this treaty appeared as 173d Airborne Brigade (Sep) a tri-national brigade. The only such tri-national fighting force formed during the Vietnam War. On deployment to South Vietnam in 1965, 1 Troop A Squadron, 4th/19th Prince of Wales's Light Horse Regiment was part of the US 173rd Airborne Brigade combat group. Trophy, McClure Cup
... Battery Quartermaster Sergeant Harold Bauerle served... in Albury Battery 1935-36 . inscription on side of cup. "McClure Cup ...Battery Quartermaster Sergeant Harold Bauerle served with the Albury Battery in the 1920s and 1030s. Shortly following Federation the military unit in Albury was redesignated No 4 New South Wales Battery Australian Field Artillery (AFA). It was under the command of Major John Wilkinson, an Albury solicitor and comprised about 100 citizen soldiers, 4 guns and about 40 horses. Training centred on the Albury Drill Hall located in Victoria Street. A reorganisation in 1912 resulted in the Battery being named No 17 Battery AFA. When war broke out in 1914 the Battery then under the command of Major Joseph Shellshear, and Albury doctor, offered its services as a trained artillery battery to the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). The Battery cooled its heels and continued to train till July 1915 when a second division was raised in the AIF and trained artillery was needed. When the call came 150 officers and men of the 17th Battery went into the AIF, many to the 13th Battery with Major Shellshear in command and others to other AIF batteries of the 4th and 5th Artillery Brigades. The 13th Battery was adopted immediately by the townsfolk of Albury as the Albury Battery. The Battery served in France and Belgium and was involved in all the major battles fought by the Australians perhaps most notably at Noreuil where the Battery found itself surrounded but continued to fight till eventually the enemy was driven back. Following the war members of the Battery nominated this battle as their most significant achievement and consequently a newly developed recreational reserve on the Murray River foreshore was named Noreuil Park. In 1919 the Battery resumed training as part of the Citizen Military Forces or Militia. Changes of title were frequent, first 27th Battery, then 60th Battery and finally 40th Battery AFA. Battery commanders included Captain Leslie Colquhoun, an Albury real estate agent, Captain Roy Collings, Albury town clerk and Captain Clifton Mott a newspaper editor. The Depression of the early 1930s almost brought about the closure of the Albury Battery but it survived through the intervention of the mayor, Alderman Alfred Waugh, who made direct representation to the Minister for Defence. When the Second World War erupted in 1939, the Battery was at full strength and a rich source of officers and trained men for the second AIF. Militia training of the few remaining officers and Albury adopted the 2/23rd Infantry Battalion which had been raised at the Showground. Following WWII, CMF soldiering recommenced in the form of an armoured regiment, the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. After nearly a half a century of service in war and peace the Albury Battery has faded and exists now in this collection of objects and images. This trophy is representative of community support for a Citizen Military Forces unit drawn from a regional NSW Town in the period between the World Wars.Silver cup with two handles mounted on Bakelite base being the McClure Cup for most efficient NCO in Albury Battery 1935-36 . inscription on side of cup."McClure Cup / for / Most efficient NCO / 1935-36 / won by / BQMS H.C. Manufactured Glass, Pharmacy beaker 'PYREX', 20thC
PYREX is a brand that was introduced by Amory Houghton Sr. (1812-1882) founder of Corning Incorporated in 1915 for a line of clear, low-thermal-expansion borosilicate glass used for laboratory glassware and kitchenware. In 1879 Corning Incorporated developed a bulb-shaped glass encasement for Thomas Edison’s new incandescent lamp. Borosilicate glass was first made by German chemist and glass technologist Otto Schott, founder of Schott AG , Jena , Germany in 1893, 22 years before Corning Inc. produced the PYREX brand. Schott AG sold the product under the name "Duran.".. In 1908, Dr. Eugene Sullivan (1872 - 1962), Director of Research at Corning Glass Works, U.S.A., who had studied in Leipzig, Germany, developed Nonex, a borosilicate low-expansion glass. 1913 Jesse Littleton of Corning Inc. discovered the cooking potential of borosilicate glass by giving his wife a casserole dish made from a cut-down Nonex battery jar. Corning Inc. removed the lead from Nonex, and developed it as a consumer product and Pyrex made its public debut in 1915 during World War I, positioned as an American-produced alternative to the German ‘Duran’. 1952 ‘Corning ware’ ceramic glass was developed by Dr. S.D.Stookey. 1994 Corning received an Award for life- changing, life- enhancing technological inventions that enabled new industries, - lighting, television, optical communications. The PYREX line of highly durable cookware and laboratory glass products are still available today. It is now made of tempered glass.A pharmaceutical clear glass beaker with capacity 300mlPYREX 300pyrex, corning ware, corning incorporated, houghton amory snr, sullivan eugene, littleton jesse, schott otto, jena germany, corning america, glass manufacturers, laboratory glass, cooking, housework, kitchen equipment, pharmacy, moorabbin, bentleigh, cheltenham, fibe optics, television, hubble telescope -

When Ballarat Junior Technical School's new building was opened in 1921, the surrounding area was rubble-strewn with raw clay slopes. The Head, A W Steane designed the landscaping of the slopes from the Gaol wall down to the Battery Paddock. The boys did much of the work. Apart from beautifying the grounds, this project occupied their leisure time, particularly as they had nowhere to play. The school acquired the gaol site in April 1969. The work of improving the grounds which was begun by A W Steane and his students is being carried on.Eight Form 1 boys from Ballarat Technical School planting trees at the old Ballarat Gaol terraces. ... with the slope from the gaol wall down to the area known as the Battery... as the Battery Paddock. The new school building was a two-storied red ...In February 1913 the Ballarat Junior Technical School opened its doors to its 86 pupils. Increased enrolment - 86 to 110 in the second year. This kept them occupied as the official playground areas were still full of rubble.View from the south-east of the Junior Technical School with the slope from the gaol wall down to the area known as the Battery Paddock. The new school building was a two-storied red brick building along the Education Department style of the 1920s. On 9 September 1921, the Junior Technical School building was officially opened. Much work was needed to terrace and landscape the area. When Ballarat Junior Technical School building was opened in 1921, there was little cleared space for the students to use for sporting activities. The area known as Battery Paddock was used for dodge-ball and football. Gradually the slope area was cleared and planted. In November 1922 a tennis court was opened in the Battery Paddock. It was designed and built by two former students of the Ballarat School of Mines. The old Mount Doran school house was moved to the area as a students' common room. A new tennis court was built in the same vicinity in 1934. This area was on the corner of Grant and Albert Streets. Area is where the Corbould Building and the Automotive Skills Centre of School of Mines Ballarat Grant Street Campus now stand. Sport and available playing areas were important and every effort was made to provide this for the students when they moved into the new building in 1921. The terraces leading down from the gaol wall were terraced and clearing areas of rubble to provide playing areas for football and cricket was done by the students. In November 1922, a tennis court was opened in the Battery Paddock. It was designed by Syd Chambers and constructed by Les Waller, former students of the Ballarat School of Mines. A new tennis court was built and opened in 1934, in the same area. This photograph is of the 1938 Tennis Team - Ballarat Junior Technical School. The boys standing are L to R: D. Eltringham and J. Equipment, Elwell-Powell, Elwell-Parker AC Generator
This AC generator operated for the State Electricity Commission in the Ballarat North Power Station prior to World War Two. James Oddie of Ballarat has an association with Thomas Parker of Elswell-Parker. In early 1887 Oddie arrived in England seeking information on electrical knowledge and its developments. At this time Henry Sutton was teaching Electricity and Magnetism at the Ballarat School of Mines. Oddie stayed in the United Kingdom for around three years and during that time became a close friend of Thomas Parker and his family. The two first met at the first official running of the Blackpool tram, and Oddie was invited to visit Parker at Wolverhampton. Over the years Thomas Parker kept newspaper cuttings (mainly Australian) relating to James Oddie and his work. The following article is a description of the Wolverhampton works by James Oddie, and was collected by Thomas Parker. After the dinner at Blackpool, Mr. Parker visited me, and cordially invited me to see his extensive works at Wolverhampton, an invitation I was not slow to avail myself of. This was the keynote of the best friendship I made in England. I went shortly afterwards and stayed several days, visiting the works daily, as Mr. Parker gave me the run of the whole works. There I ordered the installation of a 60 light dynamo, with a 28 cell storage battery and paraphernalia, now doing duty at the Observatory. I subsequently visited the works frequently, sometimes for a week at a time, and I regard it as the brightest spot in my English constellation. Mr. Parker started his works in 1880, with one man beside himself. He never had a single day’s instruction in electricity in his life; now he daily instructs between 300 and 400 employees, who worship him as a father. He is said to be now the most practical electrical engineer and mechanist in Europe. During one of my visits I took with me an artist, who is painting for me a portrait, 6 feet by 5 feet, of Mr. Parker, surrounded by dynamos, secondary batteries, measuring instruments etc. Electric tram cars are going to be a big thing in England. Parker’s Company Limited, is now, with three other companies, in the hands of the Electric Construction Company, with Mr. Parker as manager of the lot. The whole of the works will be taken to Wolverhampton. Before I left, a tender for £50,000 was accepted for the construction of new works.AC Generator painted read and black on a stand. Plan, Ballarat School of Mines Future Development: A Southern Terminal to Lydiard Street, 1947, 09/12/1947
In 1947 Percy Everett, Chief Architect for the Victorian Government, drew up plans to accomodate the growth in student numbers on the Ballarat School of Mines site. It was an era of government buildings surrounding the Ballarat School of Mines campus either being transfered to the school or foreshadowed for transfer. In 1947 two Red Cross huts were transferred from Victoria Park to the western side of the former Ballarat Supreme Court (later Courthouse Theatre) for use by Wool Classing and Motor Mechanics. In the same year additional facilities were provided for Pottery due to the increase in enrolments and a large brick classroom was built at the rear of the Ballarat Junior Technical School Building. In the annual report of 1947 the President said: "These transfers are, however, only temporary expedients and indicate the pressing need for more buildings of a permanent nature". By the end of the year the School Council decided to request the Education Department of Victoria to proceed with the implementation of the School's long-range plan whch had received approval earlier and to treat it as an urgent post-war requirement. After much communication a plan for a six-storied building, flanked by two three storied buildings was planned to be built on the site of the Ballarat Gaol was developed. The plan was sent to the Education Department for the Minister's Approval. It is not know if approval was granted, but the building did not proceed, possibly becausse the Ballarat Gaol was still very miuch in use. When a tertiary division of the Ballarat School of Mines was being developed in 1967 it corresponded with the closure of the Ballarat Gaol. It was determined that the Lydiard Street South site had no room for future growth so a new campus was sought. The new campus was purchased at Mt Helen, and was initially known as the Ballarat Insittute of Advanced Education. In 1976, when the Ballarat Teachers' College merged into the structure, the campus became known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education and it was no longer a part of the Ballarat School of Mines. Plans for a proposed building to replace the Ballarat Gaol buildings. The proposed building was never built, the concept being replaced by a new teritary facility at Mt Helen. buildings, percy everett, ballarat school of mines battery, ballarat technical art school, engineering workshops, machine shop, ballarat junior technical school, architectural plans, ballarat school of mines, smb campus
